SEO Vs PPC – From the Perspective of an SME
Dave J. Williams asked:
I can imagine that literally millions of articles exist on the best way to get a website to the top of the Google rankings – and I’ll tell you know that this is not one of them. This is an article about the experiences of SEO and PPC by a Marketing Manager at an SME.
Time – this is the biggest issue for me, PPC is categorically less time consuming, and for a marketing department of one, how I allocate time to projects is very important.
Quality – Its a very well known fact that the quality of listings is better from SEO – I can’t argue with that and nor shall I try.
Results – This is very interesting, because really it depends on the below:
Value from site – This is the most important thing, certainly for my business. What does your site do? If you sell from your site, then SEO and possibly PPC as well. If you sell a lot from your site then invest time and money into both. however if your site is simply an on-line brochure, how much marketing budget does it deserve?
My site is the online brochure type, so I started with £50 per month PPC, and have now moved into a couple of hours SEO a week to top this up.
Tracking – this is key – if I spend two hours on SEO a week I need to show my boss that it is a good move. Get Rank checker for Firefox, this will show you how you are performing in the rankings, get analytics to track number of website visitors, and get your sales team to ask where the enquiry came from and track the source of the new business. Otherwise you run the risk of being accused of spending to much time blogging and on social media.
I think in essence both SEO and PPC will reap the benefits that you put into them. Generally the more time that you spend on either the better quality of results you will get. For example spend time doing your research, get the keywords right, look at the quality of visitor, don’t be afraid to lose visitor numbers for the right reason, don’t forget site content – the site must work when people get to it.
Finally as a Marketing Manager with little on-line experience both SEO and PPC have been easy to generate results without the help of expensive agencies – so just have a go, whats the worst that can happen?
